The blood vessels present in the dermis allows the body to lose the heat and therefore leaving the cooling effect on the body. The epidermis is divided into two layers which consist of the superficial area known as the papillary region and the other reticular dermis which is the thicker area known. Dermis constitutes collagen and an extra fibrillar matrix. The senses of touch and the sense of heat are provided by the mechanoreceptors and thermoreceptors respectively. Certain blood vessels are present in the dermis that provide nourishment and waste removal for the epidermal and the dermal cells. The fibroblast, macrophages and mast cells are the constituents of the dermis. The glycosaminoglycans and glycoproteins with proteoglycans are present in the epidermis with an extracellular gel-like substance. Some sweat glands, oil glands and hair follicles are present in the dermis.
The papillary dermis is known as the uppermost layer of the dermis which are closely connected with the rete ridges of the epidermis and constitute collagen fibres that are arranged fine and loosely. It constitutes a areolar connective tissue which has hair-like projections known as the papillae of the dermal papillae that are extended to the epidermis and consists of the network of blood capillaries or Meissner's corpuscles.

The dermis is known as the thickest layer of the skin which constitutes nerves and blood vessels. The fat cells of the dermis constitute carotene which is a pigment of yellow to orange in colour.
