As you know, all substances are not present in the pure form in nature. Many of the substances are present in the form of mixtures and from which we need to separate the useful substances that we require. In order to accomplish this task of separating the desired substances from the mixtures, there are various separation techniques. Such as:
a. chromatography
b. handpicking
c. evaporation
d. sieving
e. distillation
f. filtration or sedimentation
Separation techniques are the techniques that are used to separate the two different states of matter. For example, liquid and solid, such techniques will include filtration or evaporation.
In our day to day life, there are many such situations where we need to separate some substances from a mixture in order to get the desired substance for use. Some substances are quite easy to separate and we can even separate them from our hands.
The method in which the undesirable substances are separated by hands from the mixture in order to get a suitable substance known as handpicking.
This method is one of the various methods of separation that are carried out in dry conditions. The substance that needs to be removed from the mixture can be an impurity or it can be a useful product or both the substances that are separated can be useful products.
We can separate substances in a handpicking method on the basis of size, color, shape, weight etc.
The advantage of handpicking are:
(a) Does not require any special machinery in order to carry out this process.
(b) Take less time for small quantities.
The disadvantages of handpicking include:
(A) Not feasible for large quantities.
(B) Only possible when the substance is visibly different

Note:Chromatography is a laboratory technique for the separation of a mixture. The mixture is dissolved in a fluid called the mobile phase, which carries it through a system on which is fixed a material called the stationary phase.
