Hint: Ferguson reflex is a type of reflex action that takes place in the foetus which initiates the delivery movement. In addition to it, the Ferguson reflex is also called foetal ejection reflex.
Complete step by step answer: The neuroendocrine reflex comprising the self-sustaining cycle of uterine contractions initiated by the pressure at the cervix or vaginal walls is called as foetal ejection reflex or Ferguson reflex. Ferguson reflex is most commonly seen in all mammals. Neuroendocrine reflex means the nervous signal sent to endocrine glands which in turn triggers the release of the hormone into the blood. Foetal ejection reflex is a positive feedback mechanism. Increased pressure on the internal walls of the cervix stimulates the release of contractile protein or hormone called oxytocin. The hormone oxytocin is responsible for the uterine contractions which in turn increases the pressure on the cervix until the delivery of the baby. Sensory neurons carry the sensory information regarding the mechanical stretch of the cervix. Due to the increased firing in the hypothalamo-hypophyseal tract, the hormone oxytocin is released from the posterior pituitary gland. The hormone oxytocin acts on the myometrium of the uterus leading to the increased uterine contraction. Myometrium is the middle layer of the uterus and its primary function is uterine contractions. Foetal ejection reflex is seen during the time of parturition.
Note: The Ferguson reflex or the foetal ejection reflex can be blocked by an epidural anesthesia. The high rate of intervention which includes induction or cesarean section lowers the occurrence of foetal ejection reflex. The Cesarean section is also called the C section.
