The process of decomposition is a type of aerobic respiration.When the organic materials get decomposed in the presence of oxygen, then the process is called aerobic one. These types of processes that are aerobic one are most common in nature.
For example the process of decomposition occurs on ground surfaces like on the forest floor, where droppings which have fallen from trees and those of the animals get converted into relatively stable humus. The main advantage to the decomposition process of being aerobic is that it is not accompanied by bad smell because of the presence of adequate oxygen in the environment.
In the process of aerobic decomposition, living organisms which use oxygen to feed upon the organic matter. These organisms are known to use the nitrogen, phosphorus, carbon and other required nutrients. Much of the carbon present in the decaying and degrading material serves as a source of energy for the organisms and is usually burned up and then respired as carbon dioxide.
As carbon acts both as a source of energy and also as an element in the protoplasm of the cell, more carbon is needed than nitrogen. About two-third of carbon is used in respiration as carbon dioxide, whereas the other third is combined with nitrogen in the living cells.
