Hint:Fahrenheit scale and the Celsius scale are scales that are used to measure the temperature of a given body. Use the relation between the two scales to convert the given temperature into the Celsius scale.
Formula used:
$F=\dfrac{9}{5}C+32$
Here, F is the temperature according to the Fahrenheit scale and C is the temperature according to the Celsius scale.
Complete step by step answer:
Fahrenheit scale is a scale that used to measure the temperature of a given body. There exist other standard scales that are used to measure the temperature of the body and of them is the Celsius scale. The relation between the Fahrenheit scale and the Celsius scale of temperature is given to be $F=\dfrac{9}{5}C+32$ ….. (i)
This means that if we know the temperature in one of the two scales and want to find the temperature in another scale, then just put that value in equation (i).
Therefore, substitute $F=-40$ in equation (i).
$\Rightarrow -40=\dfrac{9}{5}C+32$
$\Rightarrow -72=\dfrac{9}{5}C$
$\therefore C=-72\times \dfrac{5}{9}=-40{}^{\circ }C$
This means that the value of temperature of $-{{40}^{\circ }}F$ in the Celsius scale is $-{{40}^{\circ }}C$.
Additional information:
The other scales for measuring temperature are Kelvin and Rankine scales.
The relation between the Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin and Rankine scales is as follows:
$\dfrac{C}{5}=\dfrac{F-32}{9}=\dfrac{R}{4}=\dfrac{K-273}{5}$
Here, K is temperature in the Kelvin scale and R is the temperature in the Rankine scale.
Note:Many times students confuse between temperature and heat.Temperature is the degree of the hotness or the coldness of a given body. It tells us how hot or how cold the body is. If the temperature of the body is high, then the body is hot and if the temperature is low, then the body is cold. Whereas, heat is the energy transferred from a hotter body to a colder body. However, heat and temperature are dependent on each other.
