The Congress Session at Lahore began in 1929 and the first Prime Minister of free India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was the President of this session. He explained to everyone that the only goal for everyone should be to attain full freedom.
A pledge of complete independence was read out and everyone agreed to it. About one hundred- and seventy-two-people members supported the resolution and were in accordance with the sentiments of the Indian public.
The members firmly advocated the fact that either that they need to fight for attaining ‘Poorna Swaraj’ or that India should be ruled by Indians entirely independently which was the main purpose of this session.
The President then unfurled the tricolour flag on the banks of river Ravi on the midnight of 31 December, 1929 and this was the first time that the Indian Nationalists hoisted the Indian National Flag.
Note: It was decided that $26^{th}$ January, 1930 was to be observed as the complete independence or ‘Poorna Swaraj' day. This day was celebrated across the country with great pomp and show. Later, $26^{th}$ January is celebrated as the Republic Day of India till date.
