Hint: The new individuals that are born continue to grow till they become adults. It is a process where the transformation of the larva into an adult through undergoing several changes. Animals like a frog, butterfly, etc. undergo metamorphosis.
Complete answer:
Metamorphosis: Metamorphosis is Greek words which mean transformation or transforming. Here “meta” means after and “morphe” means form. It is a biological process where an animal physically changes that happen in an animal’s body structure through its cell growth and differentiation.
There are two types of metamorphosis. The Insect can undergo either incomplete metamorphosis or complete metamorphosis.
Incomplete metamorphosis: Insect in their early stage (larva) look-like mature adult. Examples – dragonflies, grasshoppers, etc.
Complete metamorphosis: The larva looks very different from the adults. Examples – butterflies, moth, mosquitoes, etc
Let us understand the process of metamorphosis; it includes four stages (egg, larva, pupa, and adult):
Egg: The female insect laid the eggs on the plants. The eggs are huge in number so at least some of them would survive. When eggs hatched and became caterpillars they started feeding on the same plants or leaves.
Caterpillar/larva: This is the larva stage. In this stage, the caterpillar keeps on eating and this eaten food is stored and used later in an adult. The growing caterpillar sheds its skin about 3-5 times.
Pupa: After the end of the larval stage, the caterpillar has grown into the pupa. The insect made the hard shell and pupa are present inside that. Now the larva or caterpillar stops eating. The specialised cells are undergoing rapid growth and change into the wings, legs, and other parts.
Adult: Now the larval grows completely into a mature adult. Once the adult leaves the pupa, they stretch out slowly and relax under the sunlight for 1-2 hours until its exoskeleton dries and hardens. Many species of butterfly may hibernate during the winter and may survive for a longer period. The adult butterfly mates and lays eggs.
Hence the correct answer is option D that is moth and mosquitoes.
Note: Animals which can undergo metamorphosis include insects, fish, amphibians, molluscs, tunicates, etc. During this process, they can also show changes in the source of nutrition and behaviours. In insects, the metamorphosis and growth are controlled by the hormones which are synthesized by endocrine glands.
