Hint: A colligative property can be defined as that property of a solution which generally depends on the ratio between the total numbers of solute particles present in the solution to the total number of solvent particles.
Complete Solution :
- The term colligative is derived from the Latin word called colligatus which means bound together as colligative properties helps us to understand how the properties of the solution are linked to the concentration of solute in the solution. Dilute solutions are those solutions which contain non-volatile solute and exhibit those properties which depend only on the number of solute particles present and not on the type of solute present. These properties are known as colligative properties and colligative properties are mostly seen in dilute solutions.
- Hence we can say that colligative properties of solutions are those properties which depend upon the concentration of solute molecules or ions but not upon the identity of the solute. It includes lowering of vapor pressure, elevation in boiling point, depression in freezing point and osmotic pressure.
So, the correct answer is “Option A”.
Note: We can further classify the colligative properties as those properties which are obtained by the dissolution of a non-volatile solute in a volatile solvent and in this case the properties of the solvent are changed by the solute.
