Mitosis is the process of the cell cycle involving the cell nucleus division and the separation of chromosomes. Until after cytokinesis, when the cytoplasm is split and two separate daughter cells are formed, the division process is not complete. The cell prepares for division prior to mitosis by replicating its DNA and growing its mass and organelle numbers. Chromosome movement occurs in the multiple mitosis phases.

Chromosomes are isolated, transferred to opposite poles of the cell, and stored within newly formed nuclei during these processes. Duplicated chromosomes are split evenly between two cells at the end of the division process. These daughter cells are diploid cells that are genetically similar and have the same chromosome number and type of chromosome.
Examples of cells that divide by mitosis are somatic cells. Somatic cells consist of all body cell types, except sex cells.
