Hint - To solve this question firstly we shall learn about the IUPAC. What is IUPAC naming and the process of the nomenclature of the compound and the rules involved. Hence, this information will help us in approaching our solution.
Complete answer:
IUPAC is a system of nomenclature to establish an international standard of naming compounds to facilitate communication. The goal of the system is to give each structure a unique and unambiguous name and to correlate each name with a unique and unambiguous structure.
We will first look at the some of the steps that need to be followed when naming a compound.
So, the general rule is:-
1) Recognise the functional group of the compound. This will determine the suffix of the name
2) Find the longest continuous carbon change which contains a functional group. And count each carbon in this chain. This will determine the prefix of the compound.
3) Number the carbon in the longest carbon chain. Start with the carbon at the end closest to the functional group.
4) Look at any branch chain. The branch group must be listed before the main chain in alphabetical order.
For the alkyl halide the hydrogen atom is treated much the same way as branched chain.
So according to the IUPAC nomenclature the name of the compound is 3- Ethoxy – 2- propanol.
Note - The functional group present in this compound is Ether and the side group is alcohol. Ether can be used as an anaesthetic. But the overdose of ether can cause respiratory paralysis and death. Ether is of very cheap price and comes with a very high therapeutic index with minimal respiratory and cardiac depression. But it is not used that much as it is highly explosive flammable.
