- Till 1778, this was a civil war but it became international as countries like Spain, France and Netherlands joined, which then allowed them to fight the superior British Navy as well.

- The American subjects had to face stringent laws (namely the Intolerable Acts and Stamps Act), heavy taxation (which led to the Boston Tea Party) and other oppressive methods of ruling. For instance, troops had opened fire into the crowds in 1770 after a quarrel between an American and Britisher escalated.

- Radical leaders were arrested, and coastal towns were attacked whenever attempts to overthrow and rebel were made.

Consequences of the war include:
- In 1783, the signing of the Treaty of Paris ensured that Americans were no longer facing economic burden from their colonizers as troops evacuated and America was made free.

- By 1787, the Confederation had written the Constitution and formed the basic branches of government.

-Mostly written by Jefferson, on July 4th 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted making this official. This is celebrated with fireworks and gatherings etc. annually.
