Hint: Magnets are any material that is capable of producing a magnetic field outside itself. They are capable of attracting iron and iron-based materials. Most of the known elements have been tested for the magnetic property of which the most common property was diamagnetism. Some of the weak metals do not attract magnets. We can see briefly about metals and why they do not attract magnets.
Complete answer:
Some of the metals including aluminum, gold are not attracted by magnets because they are some of the weak metals. Copper is also one of those weak metals and that is why they are not picked up by a magnet. However, we can make them attracted to magnets by adding the property of the iron or steel and make them stronger. Copper is diamagnetic and they are not attracted but are repelled by a magnetic field. We can make weak metals like silver as a magnetic material by adding a small quantity of iron.
Therefore the answer to the above question is that magnet does not pick up copper.
Note:
Something remarkable happens when we drop strong magnets onto a plate of copper. Before hitting the surface these magnets appear to levitate slightly or slow down before hitting the surface like copper is some magnetic force that is pushing them away. This is because copper is diamagnetic. The copper when it’s approached by magnets the electrons on the surface of the copper start rotating. The electrons briefly create their magnetic field making an effort to resist the magnet’s pull. This slows the magnet’s descent.
