 The only major port of Karnataka is the New Mangalore Port and is currently the seventh largest port in India. The Old Mangalore Port is popularly known by the name of Bunder and is located south of the New Mangalore Port. The port of Mangalore is surrounded by backwaters of the river Gurupura and Nathravathi and referred to as the ‘Gateway of Karnataka’.
Mangalore, officially known as Mangalore is located between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats mountain range about 352 km (219 mi) west of Bangalore, the capital of the state. Along with the Karnataka coastline there are 21 minor ports in the New Mangalore Port. Mangalore is the only city in a state which has all four modes of transport- air, road, rail, sea and is a commercial, industrial, educational, healthcare and startup hub, is also the administrative headquarters of the South Kannada district.
It is said that Mangalore was named after a deity named Mangaladevi.
The Karnataka government and the central government in the early nineties have been making serious efforts to improve its port infrastructure.
