Hint: Metals are electropositive and easily lose the electrons. Generally, metal will be present with some impurities and has to be refined. The process of separating impurities from metal can be called as refining. They are different types or methods in refining metals.
Complete answer:
Metallurgy is the branch of science that deals with the properties and production of metals.
In metallurgy, roasting, calcination and refining are the three-process involved to purify the metals.
But metallurgy is different as the metal obtained after refining is identical to the original one.
The calcination and roasting are the processes in which the original metal will undergo a chemical change.
They are different methods for the refining of metals.
Some of them are:
i.Distillation,
ii.Liquation and
iii.Zone Refining
Distillation is one of the methods of refining to obtain the pure metal as a distillate; the impure metal is evaporated. Metals like Zinc, Mercury that have low boiling points can be purified by this method.
Liquation is used for the metals with low boiling points as these are made to flow on a sloped surface, the impurities with high boiling points can be separated and thus the pure metal can be obtained.
Zone refining is a technique useful for the metals in molten state, the metals move along with the heating coil, which makes the metals molten and the impurities move along with it and can be removed.
Note:
The metals like zinc mercury having low boiling points can be purified by the method of distillation, and the metals like tin can be distillate by liquidation and the metals like Silicon and Germanium can be purified by zone refining.
