Hint: The human skeleton is designed in a manner in which it usually is well-adapted for the functions which it must perform. Functions of the bones includes the support, protection, movement or mineral storage, & the formation of the blood cells.
Complete answer:
The adult human skeleton generally consists of the 206 named bones. These bones can then be grouped in 2 divisions: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The 80 bones are in the axial skeleton and then form the vertical axis of the body. These include the bones of the head, vertebral column, ribs & the breastbone or the sternum. The appendicular skeleton generally consists of the 126 bones & includes the free appendages and their attachments with the axial skeleton. The free appendages are the upper and the lower extremities, or the limbs, and their attachments which are usually called the girdles.
There are generally 2 types of bone tissue: one is compact and the other is spongy. Compact bone normally consists of the closely packed osteons, or the Haversian system. Spongy bones usually have the plates of bone which is called as trabeculae, around irregular spaces which contain the red bone marrow.
Osteogenesis is known as the process of the bone formation. Three types of cells, osteoblasts, osteocytes, and the osteoclasts, are involved in the bone formation and remodeling.
In intramembranous ossification, the connective tissue membranes are usually replaced by the bone. This process also consists of the flat bones of the skull. In the endochondral ossification, bone tissue gets replaced by the hyaline cartilage models. Most bones are then formed in this manner.
Note: Bones generally grow in length at the epiphyseal plate bw the diaphysis & the epiphysis. When the epiphyseal plate gets completely ossifies, bones then no longer increase in length. Bones may also be classified as the long, short, flat, or the irregular. The diaphysis of the long bone is in the central shaft. There is an epiphysis at the each end of the diaphysis. So a total of 206 bones are found.
