The bond angle is defined as the average angle between the orbitals containing bonding electron pairs around the central atom in a molecule. It is measured in degree or minute or second.
The bond angle gives an idea about the location of bond pairs and lone pairs as well as it tells about the location of central atoms and surrounding atoms so that we can determine the shape and geometry of the molecules. For example-ammonia has angle of \[{107.5^0}\]between the two hydrogen atoms and in water, the bond angle is \[{104.5^0}\] between the two hydrogen atoms, both of them have same hybridization and geometry.
The bond angle may vary from molecule to molecule. The bond angle depends upon the number of lone pairs, size and electronegativity of the central atom and size of surrounding atoms.
Note: If the size of the central atom is large then the electrons are having space and occupy the space where they do not feel repulsion with one another. So, the bond pairs between the central atom and surrounding atom would be far to each other and hence bond angle increases. For example, methane, ammonia and water, the bond angles are \[{109.5^0}\], \[{107.5^0}\] and \[{104.5^0}\] respectively.
