
How is the boiling point of water affected when some salt is mixed into it?

When salt is mixed into the water, and we know that salt contains Sodium and chloride ions, then the salt ions dissociate into Sodium and Chlorine- ions. We also know that in the water, hydrogen bonding is present. When Sodium and Chlorine go inside the water, it interferes with the dipole of H+ and O.H- Cloud. Sodium+ starts interfering with the O.H.- pole, and Chlorine- starts interfering with the H+ pole. Hence, to break the interfering behavior between water and salt, more input heat energy is required, i.e., more temperature is necessary to change the phase of water to water vapor. The boiling point also depends upon the quantity of salt (solute) added to the water. If the amount of salt added to the water is more, then the boiling point of water is also more.
It also means that the particles of water need more input heat to jump the surface of the liquid and change the state. Therefore, the boiling point of water becomes more when salt is mixed into it.
Note: When we go to great heights such as hills or mountains, then at that place, the atmospheric pressure is shallow. So the boiling point water decreases at that place. Hence, to overcome this effect, we cook food for more time.
