Subramania Bharathi was born on 11 December 1882 in the village by the name Ettayapuram of Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu. From a very young age he showed a great amount of interest in literature and was known as a gifted child because of the performance he showed in all the fields he touched. After college education he was selected to become an engineer. But, when he visited Varanasi, he became spiritually attached to the ideologies of both Hinduism and Nationalism. They became dominant factors in his life such that he changed his whole appearance in order to be a true follower. In 1901 He became the court poet of Raja of Ettayapuram. After a bunch of other jobs, he went on to become an editor of the newspaper called Swadeshmitran. An encounter with sister Nivedita, who was an heir to Swami Vivekananda, he was able to know more about the importance of empowerment within the women of this nation. He attended the Indian National Congress session in Calcutta, which demanded Swaraj and boycott of British goods.

All these experiences taught him the importance of change that was a necessity at the time. Hence, he took his greatest weapon, his pen and started writing about the cruelty of British rule and the importance of banishing old rituals like child marriage and female emancipation. His poems were filled with patriotism and the foreseen change. He raised his voice against the caste system and believed in Brahmanism. He was also in solidarity with Dalits and Muslims and fought for their equal rights. Hence, it is clear that Bharathiar was a great freedom fighter, who fought for the freedom of the country and people’s rights through words.

Note:The legacy of Bharathiar continued even after his demise as The Government of India instituted a highest National Subramanyam Bharti Award in 1987 which celebrates writers of outstanding works in Hindi literature annually. A state university known as Bharathiar University was established and named after the poet, in 1982 at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The statue of Bharathiar is situated at Marina Beach and also in the Indian Parliament. A Tamil Movie was made in the year 2000 , titled Bharathi in order to celebrate his life.
