There are many types of Barometers, but the most common kinds are water-based Barometers and Mercury Barometers. A water ball Barometer has a sealed body made of glass and a spout. It is filled halfway with water. The water level in the spout is higher than in the body when the atmospheric pressure is lower, and the level in the spout is lower at high atmospheric pressure.
Mercury Barometers have a vertical glass tube with a closed top sitting in a basin of mercury. When the atmospheric pressure is high, Mercury is pushed into the tube and the level rises. Graduations on the tube can provide information on the amount of pressure.

Note There is another instrument known as a pressure altimeter which is used to predict the altitude of a place depending on the atmospheric pressure experienced by the instrument.
