Papillae have three types. They are fungiform, filiform, and circumvallated.
Fungiform papillae look like mushrooms and filiform papillae look like thread structure. Fungi form papillae scattered across the tongue. Humans have 200400 fungiform papillae placed in sides and tip of the tongue. It has raised lingual structure which is used for taste perception. This structure varies based on the systemic and local factors. Each papilla consists of 35 taste buds.
Filiform papillae are cone shaped structures and look small. It gives texture to the tongue and is responsible for touch also. It is on the front side of the tongue and occupies two thirds of the tongue's surface. Main function of these papillae is chewing the food and speaking.
Circumvallate papillae are in the V shape and occupy the posterior third of the tongue. Taste buds are also placed in the epiglottis and oral mucosa. These cells are modified epithelial cells. It acts as sensory receptors. This is used to taste bitter and sour in adults. It is also used to sense temperature.

Papilla not only used for taste the food but also to informs the brain if the nose smokes poisonous gas or smoke. It informs nearby nerve fibers and the gustatory portion of brain. If the person gets aged but the taste buds don’t get replaced. Ability to taste and also the ability to smell. Foliate papillae are also the type of papillae but it is not present in the humans. It is only in the rabbit. Filiform papillae don't contain any taste buds.
