The pericardium, also known as the pericardial sac, is a membrane that surrounds the heart and characterises pericardial depression. It also includes the "roots" of the major vessels, or the spaces that are closest to the heart. The pericardium is made up of two sublayers: the tough external stringy pericardium and the internal serous pericardium, which literally means "around the middle."

Excess fluid in the pericardial area can result in a condition known as cardiac tamponade or pericardial tamponade. More fluid – in most cases blood – builds up in the pericardial cavity with each cardiac contraction. For the next contraction the heart must relax in order to fill with blood. But excessive fluid in the pericardial cavity puts pressure on the heart and prevents complete relaxation, so as each heart cycle begins, the chambers in the heart contain slightly less blood.
