A Steroid hormone is a group of hormones belonging to the class of chemical compounds Steroid. They can be grouped into Corticosteroids (made in Adrenal cortex) and Sex steroids (made in Gonads or placenta). Steroid hormones are synthesized in Mitochondria and Endoplasmic reticulum by a series of enzymatic reactions. They have different biological roles.
1. Cortisol, Corticosterone, 11- dehydro corticosterone, Cortisone :
They are steroid hormones and a class of Glucocorticoids. And their functions include control of blood sugar level, Regulating metabolism, and acting as an anti-inflammatory.
2. Aldosterone :
It is a steroid hormone and class of Mineralocorticoids. The main role is to Salt and Water balance in the body.
3. Testosterone :
Testosterone is a steroid hormone and belongs to the class of Androgens. It is a male sex hormone. They play an important role in normal male sexual development.
4. Estradiol and Estrone:
