A clash of interests is referred to as a conflict. Conflict has many causes, but it is still a part of society. Private, ethnic, class, caste, political, and international factors may all contribute to conflict. Conflict in groups sometimes takes a predictable path. There are two different forms of confrontation that can propel the plot forward.

i) The first is an internal conflict. In this situation, the conflict is between the main character and himself, his emotions and thoughts. With internal conflicts, the character could be battling his conflicting emotions, a decision he must make, or his own personality flaws.

1. Macbeth, a play by Shakespeare. In this play, Macbeth is torn between his motives and his internal struggle, which leads him to kill the king in order to take his place.
2. Harry Potter, a fantasy novel by J.K. Rowling. In the fifth novel, Harry is torn between his instinct to believe his dream of Sirius being apprehended and the truth.

ii) An external conflict is the other form of conflict. This dispute occurs outside of the character's control, such as in the family or at work. External conflicts are battles between the character and other people or things outside of himself. When the protagonist is pitted against the antagonist, the main form of external conflict occurs. Other forms of external conflicts, on the other hand, may arise as a result of other characters, natural events, or the environment in which the character resides.

1. Macbeth, a play by Shakespeare. His men turn against him after he kills the king, and he is forced to battle his countrymen. This is an external conflict.
2. The tragedy of Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet is a Shakespearean tragedy in which Romeo and Juliet fall in love, but their families and society interfere.
