Non-renewable energy is derived from sources that will deplete or will not be regenerated in our lives—or perhaps many lifetimes.The majority of non-renewable energy sources are fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas. Carbon is the primary component of fossil fuels. As a result, the time period during which fossil fuels developed (about 360-300 million years ago) is known as the Carboniferous Period.

All fossil fuels are created in the same way. Earth had a diverse terrain hundreds of millions of years ago, even before the dinosaurs. It was surrounded by vast, shallow oceans and swampy woodlands.These ancient wetlands were home to plants, algae, and plankton. They absorbed sunlight and converted it into energy via photosynthesis. When the organisms perished, they sank to the bottom of the sea or lake. When plants and animals died, they left behind a lot of energy.

The dead plants were crushed beneath the seafloor over time. Rocks and other silt stacked on top of them, causing underground tremendous heat and pressure. Plant and animal carcasses were eventually converted into fossil fuels in this environment (coal, natural gas, and petroleum). Today, there are vast underground pockets (known as reservoirs) of these non-renewable energy sources all throughout the world.

Note: The use of fossil fuels, on the other hand, is destructive to the environment. When coal and oil are burned, particles that can damage the air, water, and land are released. Some of these particles are captured and stored, while many are discharged into the atmosphere.
