Hint: 1)Contrasting forms of a gene are called Alleles.
2) A characteristic which is determined genetically is called a trait.

Complete answer:
Alleles are alternative types of a gene in a population that circulate. At a gene loci, diploid (2n) cells can be homozygous, having two alleles that are the same, or they can be heterozygous, having a gene loci of two different alleles. For the gene loci in the population, there may be only one allele. In that case, the gene loci will be homozygous in all members of that population. In a population of gene loci, there may be several alleles. No person may however, have more than two.

A trait is affected by gene products which are proteins. It is a physical attribute.
One gene or several genes may affect a trait, having alleles in various combinations, modifying a trait in different ways, and to varying degrees.
Mendel's pea plant experiments make it easy to understand and distinguish between them. The gene coding for a pea's form for example, has two alleles, wrinkled and round. Depending on the combination of alleles on the chromosome, the phenotype that will be expressed will either be wrinkled or round. Laws of dominance and segregation play a role here.

Note: 1.The allele which determines the phenotype in its presence is called a dominant allele.
2.The allele which is not expressed is called a recessive allele.
3.A gene determines an organism’s genotype.
