Hint: As we know that the alkaline fuel cell (AFC) is one of the most developed fuel cell technologies and these cells consume hydrogen and pure oxygen so as to produce potable water, heat and electricity. So here we have to tell another name of alkaline fuel cell.
Complete answer:
Let us first discuss about alkaline fuel cell as follows:-
-Alkaline fuel cell: It is one of the most developed fuel cell technologies in the present era and these cells consume hydrogen and pure oxygen so as to produce potable water, heat and electricity. So here we have to tell another name of alkaline fuel cell. These are among the most efficient fuel cells which have the potential to reach upto 70%.
-It was developed by a British inventor, Francis Thomas Bacon and hence this cell is also known as Bacon cell. The fuel cell produces power with the help of a redox reaction between hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. At the anode, hydrogen gas is oxidized which produces water and releases electrons. These electrons flow by an external circuit and return to the cathode where they ultimately reduce oxygen in the reaction, hence producing hydroxide ions.
At anode: ${{H}_{2}}+2O{{H}^{-}}\to 2{{H}_{2}}O+2{{e}^{-}}$
At cathode: ${{O}_{2}}+2{{H}_{2}}O+4{{e}^{-}}\to 4O{{H}^{-}}$
The net reaction will show the consumption of one oxygen molecule and two hydrogen molecules which will produce two water molecules. By-products of this reaction are electricity and heat.
-From the above data we can conclude that another name of alkaline fuel cell is Bacon cell.
Note:
-Remember that alkaline fuel cells (AFC) operate above ambient temperature with an electrical efficiency higher than fuel cells with acidic electrolyte.
-Also these are the cheapest fuel cells to get manufactured easily.
