A trip to Saurashtra was organised by the school in a minibus for $ 28 $ students and in a regular bus for $ 45 $ students. Each student contributed for Rs. $ 500. $ During the trip, the expenses were: food bill Rs. $ 9,855, $ entry fees Rs. $ 3,285, $ mini bus charge Rs. $ 5,432, $ the regular bus charge Rs. $ 8,730 $ and boarding charge Rs. $ 6,132. $ was there any money left in excess or was there a shortfall of it? How much?
A. $ {\text{Rs}}{\text{. 3,066}} $

Hint: Here, find first the total contribution and then the total expenses held during the trip. The difference between the expenses and the contribution gives us the relation about the excess money or shortfall.

Complete step-by-step answer:
Total number of students is equal sum of students in a mini bus and in the regular bus
Total number of students $ = 28 + 45 $
Total number of students $ = 73 $
Total contribution $ = tota\operatorname{l} {\text{ number of students }} \times {\text{ 500}} $
Total contribution $ = 73 \times 500 $
Total contribution $ = 36,500 $ ..... (a)
Now, total expenses is sum of all the expenses done during the trip
 $ = 9855 + 3285 + 5432 + 8730 + 6132 $
Simplify the above equation –
Total expenses $ = 33,434 $ ...... (b)
Total contribution is greater than the total expenses.
Therefore, the money left in excess is the difference of the equation (b) and the equation (a)
The money left in excess
  $
   = 36500 - 33434 \\
   = 3,066 \;
  $
So, the correct answer is “Option A”.

Note: Remember if the total expense is greater than the total contribution, then there would be the shortfall in the money. The basic mathematical calculations should be done carefully, rest goes well in these types of questions.
