The role of a gear system is to control the motion of the vehicles and is responsible for the speed of the car.A gear system consists of two wheels of different sizes connected to each other in order to exhibit rotatory motion and transfer this motion from one location to the other and this results in a change in speed of the vehicle or a change in its direction due to the direction of rotation of the wheels of the gear system.

When one wheel rotates the other one also rotates as well at more rotations to catch up with it.
One wheel is usually bigger than the other one and when both the wheels move in the same direction, they are said to make internal contact with each other. Similarly, when the motion of the bigger wheel rotates in anticlockwise direction leading to the smaller wheel rotating in clockwise direction and this is called external contact wherein the direction of the wheels are in opposite directions. The bigger wheel which is operated by the driver is known as the driven gear and the smaller wheel which is near the power source is called the driving gear.
Since the wheels of the gear system are said to control the speed of the machine of a vehicle like a car, it does this by using the concept of force acting at a point and its corresponding speed since both of these wheels simply act like a first-class lever. The gear system is basically thought of as a lever which also has the ability to rotate at a speed which is desired.
The force is inversely relating to the quantity known as speed and due to this when more force is applied at the point connecting the two wheels then the speed of the other wheel will be less and likewise when the force applied is less and when there is a need to increase the speed then the speed at which the wheels rotate will be more or in other words the number of rotations per second will be more.Hence, this is the working of the gear system.

The gear system is widely used in various applications like in our cars; that is the car would not move until and unless the gear of the car is enabled, that is, before starting the car the low gear must be enabled as the speed must be slowly increased before starting the car.
