The galvanometer is an electromechanical instrument which is used for determining and denoting an electric current. The galvanometer works as a controller, by creating a rotary deviation in reaction to electric current moving through a coil in a constant magnetic field.

So as to convert a Galvanometer into an Ammeter, a very small amount of resistance known as the "shunt" resistance is connected to the Galvanometer. The value of shunt resistance is modified so that most of the current passes through the shunt. The Galvanometer is converted into Ammeter by connecting the shunt resistance parallel in a circuit of series connection.
