There are about 6000 species of living reptiles including lizards, snakes, turtles, tortoises, crocodiles and alligators. The largest reptiles of today are pythons that may grow up to 10 m. Most present day reptiles are carnivorous or insectivorous, however a few are herbivorous. Reptiles are classified into 3 orders – Squamata (includes lizards and snakes), Chelonian (includes tortoises and turtles), crocodilian (includes crocodiles and alligators).
Animals that are able to crawl –
Lizards – They are terrestrial reptiles found everywhere in warm climates.
Snakes – They are limbless reptiles. They occur in wild places with thick vegetation.
Crocodiles – These are large amphibian reptiles that are found in streams and rivers.
Alligators – These are also large amphibians that are found in streams and rivers and mainly these are fish eaters but can attack man.
Tortoises – These are fresh water, marine or land dwelling reptiles. Example- Testudo.
Turtles – These are also fresh water, marine or land dwelling reptiles. Example- Chelone.

1. For checking the loss of water, there are horny scales present on their body.
2. Internal fertilization as gametes cannot survive on land.
3. For checking desiccation there is a shell present around the egg.
4. Fluid filled amnion around the embryo to provide an aquatic environment on land.
