Introduction to Writing in Figures

A number is used while counting and measuring. Some words can be used to describe it. More commonly, individual numbers are represented by symbols known as numerals. Suppose we consider the number "9"; it will stand for the word ‘nine’. To function in our daily lives, we simply need to learn 0 to 9 of the entire number system.

We can easily carry on our daily calculations using these few digits combined with some arithmetic operations. The Hindu-Arabic number system is the most common and widely spread. It lets us depict any number using a combination of these ten basic numeric symbols.

Rules to Write Number Names 1 to 20:

Certain rules need to be followed to write the names:

  • First, we need to learn all the names of the numbers from 0 - 9.

  • Learn the names of 10, 11 and 12 that are ten, eleven and twelve respectively.

  • The suffix ‘teen’ should be added to the numbers in words from 3 to 9 to write the numbers from 13 to 19. For example, the number 14 can be written as $four + teen = fourteen$.

  • For the numbers having zero at their unit place, add the suffix “ty” to the number names for the numbers from 20 to 90. For example, for 50, we can write, i.e., $fif + ty = fifty$.

  • For the numbers which don't have zero at their end, break down the numbers. Suppose it's 55, then we can break it down as $50 + 5 = 55$. Similarly, by writing in words, we get $fifty + five = fifty-five$.

Examples on Number Names 1 to 20:

For a better understanding of number names let's look at a few examples to get a better understanding.

Example 1:

Write the number names of the value $10 + 9$.

Solution:

On solving $10 + 9$, we get

$10 + 9 = 19$

Writing 19 in words, we get nineteen.

Example 2:

Write the number names of the value $50 + 20$.

Solution:

On solving $50 + 20$, we get

$50 + 20 = 70$

Writing 70 in words, we get seventy.

Example 3:

Write the number names for the value 99.

Solution:

We can break down 99 as $90 + 9 = 99$.

By writing in words, we get $ninety + nine = ninety nine$.

Therefore, the number name for the value 99 is ninety-nine.
