This responsibility is shared by Pandu who now becomes the King of Hastinapur. Already living in an inferiority complex because of blindness, Dhritrashtra grows jealous of his younger brother.

Following a series of events, the Pandava has to leave the throne and the kingdom for exile. With no other successor left Dhritarashtra is made the King of Hastinapur. During this period, both - Dhritarashtra and Pandu became fathers of a hundred sons and five sons respectively, who became known as Kauravas and Pandavas respectively. The untimely death of Pandu because of a curse forces the Pandavas to return to Hastinapur with their mother and widow wife of Pandu, Queen Kunti. Thus, from there onwards there is a sense of hatred brewing between the Kauravas and Pandavas and Dhritarashtra being emotionally blinded by the love for his son Duryodhana keeps on favouring him and his brothers instead of being fair to all.

Following a multitude of series of events and many trials to stop a war, an epic battle ensues between the forces of Kauravas and Pandavas. Mahabharat is the story of this war and the sense of just and unjust, right and wrong, good and evil.
