1. What is sleep? 

Ans: Sleep can be defined as a state of rest or an unconscious state. It is the time when a person’s mind and body relaxes and recovers from the fatigue caused by daily work.


2. What happens when we sleep? 

Ans: Our bodies recover from the exhaustion generated by the day's activities while we sleep. We enter a very relaxed state as our heartbeat slows down and Blood pressure falls.


3. What happens after we wake up from a good sleep?

Ans: We become aware and active again after a good night's sleep and the rest it provides, ready to resume our daily activities. It helps us feel fresh in the morning.


4. Do we remember things that occur when we sleep? 

Ans: No, we do not remember things that happen when we sleep because it feels like nothing but darkness. At times, we only remember our dreams.


5. What is a dream? 

Ans: When we are sleeping our subconscious mind may go through some activities or thoughts; those are what we call dreams. Hence, dreams are the concept of letting us have a sound sleep while the mind witnesses disturbance or noise. Dreams are also a reflection of one’s daily life and reveal a lot about one’s problems. However, it cannot predict the future.

1. What changes occur in our bodies when we sleep?

Ans: As we sink into a deep sleep, our muscles relax at faster rates. Our hearts start beating very slowly. The temperature and the blood pressure are reduced. The brain goes unconscious for a while so that we cannot think or act consciously.


2. ‘Some dreams are probable while others are not. Explain this line.

Ans: The line ‘Some dreams are probable while others are not’ means that some of our dreams have the possibility to happen in real life. But then we often see dreams that are far from reality. It means that all our dreams don’t occur with us actually; they get erased from our memories once we wake up from sleep.


3. What have doctors figured about dreams?

Ans: According to some doctors, dreams can reveal something important about one’s problems. If we analyse such dreams closely and pay attention to them, they might as well help us in solving our problems.


4. Does dreaming mean that we are seeing the future? 

Ans: No, dreaming doesn’t mean seeing the future because dreaming is a state of the subconscious mind.  Dreams often suggest ways of solving life problems but they never show how we will actually solve such problems in the future. Dreams may indicate something related to an upcoming event but they do not exactly mean we are seeing the future. Sometimes, we even dream about the things that have already happened.


5. Write 6 lines from the poem - "Lights Out”

Ans: The 6 lines from the poem “Lights Out” are as follows—

1. Define the title of the poem - “The Wonder Called Sleep”. 

Ans: Sleep is the most common as well as a routine activity that every organism performs. Despite being ordinary work, people call it a wonder because of the aftermath of sleep. Sleep helps our body rest and feel normal and relaxed as before. It prepares our body to be active and excel in the upcoming day’s activities. That is why it is said to have a proper sleep before starting anything that may give us stress such as exams.


2. What is a “dream” according to you? 

Ans: According to me, a “dream” can be defined as an activity that our mind performs while we are sleeping. Dreams could be of any type and they could happen at any time during our sleep. They could trigger a memory from our past or could also indicate something about our future. Dreams are scary, funny, or even dramatic. However, they are not real. Psychologists believe that dreams are the result of our constant thinking. Hence what we think deeply is reflected in our dreams. 


3. How much do you think a person of your age should sleep? Is it okay if the person oversleeps or sleeps less than needed regularly? 

Ans: As I have read, I think a person of my age, i.e., of the age group of  9-13 years should sleep at least 8 hours a day. No, it is not okay for any person to sleep less or oversleep regularly. Everyone needs to sleep not more or less than 6 hours at least. Sleeping less or oversleeping can lead to the following adverse outcomes—

(a) If a person sleeps more than 8 hours, the brain cells have a faster rate of getting damaged which implies higher chances of dying. 

(b) And if a person sleeps less than 6 hours regularly, his body will soon start feeling exhausted and his mind might stop working after doing certain activities. 

Therefore, on average, children from the age group of 9-13 years should have a minimum of 8 hours of sleep.


4. Have you ever had a scary dream? Explain.

Ans: Yes, I have had scary dreams quite a few times. Most often than not, my dreams are scary only as I watch scary shows and movies a lot. Let me explain one such experience here in detail -

The dream was about me getting lost in a haunted palace. I saw I went on a trip with my family, we went to this haunted palace in Rajasthan and I got lost. It was getting dark, and I was looking for my parents. That is when I thought something touched me. I started screaming, not only in the dream but also in reality. My parents woke me up and wanted to know if anything was wrong. I told them I saw a scary dream which was the result of watching a scary show that day. Since then, my parents don’t let me watch such shows or movies anymore.


5. Give a summary of the poem “Lights Out”. 

Ans: The poem “Lights Out” is written by Edward Thomas. In this poem, he describes the power of sleep. The poet has compared sleep with deep, dark, and dense forest, a forest where everyone loses his/her way at one point. The poet further illustrates it as a time when all the human emotions like love, affection, hate, and ambitions come to rest. It is a mysterious path yet it provides great pleasure and calms to people going through it.  It is the choice of the person to walk on the path of sleep.
