RS Aggarwal Class 6 Chapter 7 explains about Decimal Numbers. To define Decimal Numbers in simple terms- They are the Numbers used to represent Numbers lesser than one. The Decimal point or to call it period plays a very vital role in Decimal Numbers as it separates the fraction from the whole Number. Decimal Number is divided into two parts. Left side of the Decimal point is one part and to the right side of the Decimal point is another part. The part to the left side of the Decimal point is called the whole Number and the part to the right side of the Decimal point is called the Decimal part.

For Example, in the Decimal Number 42.6, the whole Number part is 42 and the Decimal part is 6.

Types of Decimal Numbers

Decimal Numbers can be of different kinds, namely

- Recurring Decimal Numbers

These are the Repeating or Non-Terminating Decimal Numbers.

Example:

3.125125 (Finite)

3.121212121212….. (Infinite)

- Non Recurring Decimal Numbers

They are the Non Repeating or Terminating Decimal Numbers.

Example:

3.2376 (Finite)

3.137654….(Infinite)

- Decimal Fraction

It denotes the fraction whose denominator is in powers of ten.

For Example:

88.42 = 8842/100

53.651= 53651/1000

Arithmetic Operations on Decimal Numbers

Arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division operation can be performed on Decimal Numbers. Let us now focus on the important points while doing arithmetic operations.

Addition/ Sum

While adding the Decimal Numbers, line up the Decimal points of the given Numbers and find the sum of the Numbers. If a Decimal point is not present (i.e., whole Numbers), the Decimal is behind the Number.

Subtraction/ Minus

Similar to the addition of Decimal Numbers, line up the Decimal point of the given Numbers, and minus the values. To perform the arithmetic operation, make use of place holding zeros as the reference.

Multiplication

Multiply the given Numbers just like any other integers in such a way as if the Decimal point is not present. After getting the product, count up how many Numbers are present after the Decimal point in both the Numbers, this count 2ill represents how many Numbers are needed following the Decimal point in the product value.

Division/ Divide

To just divide the Decimal Numbers, move the Decimal point in the Numbers such that the Number becomes the whole Number. Now, do the division operation like the integer division.
