About the Chapter
‘Fractions’ is the Sixth Chapter in the NCERT Maths Textbooks for Class 6 Students.
After studying integers in the previous chapter and learning how fractions cannot be integers if, after division, their remainder is not zero, we finally delve into Fractions in detail. This chapter is the last one under the Number System of the NCERT Textbook.
In Maths, we can often refer to Fractions as portions of an aggregate. If we compare it to real life, it’s like a piece of cake is a fraction, and the whole cake is the whole number.
‘/’ is the symbol that is used to donate fractions. If we take the example of 4/9, which is a fraction, Number 4 would be called the Numerator, which is the upper part of the fraction. 9 will be the Denominator as it’s the lower part.

We can divide fractions into two parts, Numerator & Denominator.

For example, if there’s a Pizza divided into 5 slices and one person eats 2 pieces of that pizza, we can define his consumption in a mathematical form as 2/5.

4. What are the basic three types of Fractions?
There are three basic types of Fractions.
First are, Proper Fractions, where a numerator is smaller than the denominator. E.g. 4/9

And lastly, we have Mixed Fractions, which is a combination of whole and part. E.g. 2 1/3
5. What are the properties of Fractions?
Some of the most significant properties are:
Associative Property: You can change the groupings of fractions being added or multiplied without changing the overall sum. For example,
(½ + 1/3) + ⅕ = ½ + (⅓ + 1/5)
Commutative Property: Changing the order of fractions during addition or multiplication does not change the sum and product respectively. For example,
½ + ⅙ = ⅙ +½
Identity Property: The additive identity property states that the sum of any fraction and 0 is the fraction itself, that is,
3/10 + 0 = 3/10
The multiplicative identity property states that the multiplication of a fraction with 1 gives the fraction, that is,
3/10 * 1 = 3/10
Distributive Property: It allows us to multiply one term with a set of terms in parentheses, that is,
⅓ * (1+3) = (⅓ * 1) + (⅓ *3)
Inverse Property: A multiplicative inverse is a number which when multiplied with the given term gives 1, which is also called reciprocal, that is,
Let x is the inverse of ⅕,
⅕ * x = 1
X = 1 / (1/5) = 5
