Hint: IUPAC stands for “International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry”. IUPAC name is the name which is given to the compound as a universal name which is valid everywhere.
Complete step by step answer:
IUPAC imposes some rules regarding the nomenclature of compounds in the chemistry and which are as follow:
-First we calculate the total number of carbon atoms present in the long chain and in the given question three carbon atoms are present in the compound, so we use the term ‘prop’ as a prefix for these 3 carbon atoms and these are present in the form of alkyl groups.
-Then after this we will do the numbering of chain by providing least or first number to the carbon atom where functional group is attached and in the given compound alcohol functional group is present and numbering is done by providing first position to the functional number as follow:
$\mathop {{\text{C}}{{\text{H}}_{\text{3}}}}\limits_3 {\text{ - }}\mathop {{\text{C}}{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}}\limits_2 {\text{ - }}\mathop {{\text{C}}{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}}\limits_1 {\text{ - OH}}$
-And the name of alkyl is followed by the name of the functional group.
-If any branch is attached to the main chain then their name is also used during the nomenclature, but in the given compound no branching is present.
By following the above rules we will give the name “propanol” to the given compound ${\text{C}}{{\text{H}}_{\text{3}}}{\text{ - C}}{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}{\text{ - C}}{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}{\text{ - OH}}$.
Note:
Here some of you may do wrong nomenclature if you are not familiar with the rules given by the IUPAC, and may write the name like 1-alcohol propane, prop-1-alcohol and so on.
