Marble is obtained through a process of metamorphism in which the original rocks transformed into new rocks. Marble is composed of alkaline earth minerals and carbonate, which is commonly known as calcite or dolomite.
The texture of marble appears to be non-foliated i.e. it does not exist in layers. The marble is used for making sculptures and monuments. The material is termed as metamorphosed limestone.
The chemical name of marble is calcium carbonate. The chemical formula of marble is CaCO3. It is an inorganic chemical compound consisting of Ca2+ ions and CO32 ions. It is found as a white mineral in chalks, limestones and marbles.
Marble undergo destruction in presence of acids. The marble reacts with acids and produces carbonic acid and carbon dioxide. Thus the marble is damaged by acid rains.

The different types of marble have characteristic colours like white, blue, gray, pink, green and black which depend on the presence of impurities such as iron oxides, clay, sand, silt and magnesium etc.
