There are mainly three states of matter known as: solids, liquids and gases. Solids: Solids are those states of matter which have definite shape and volume. Fixed means if we place them in any container then their shape will not change. It will be the same as before. In solids molecules are closely packed. Liquids: Liquids are those states of matter whose atoms or particles are held together by intermolecular force which is less than that of forces in solids.
Liquids have definite shape but not volume i.e. they will take the shape of the container. For example: if we place them in a cylindrical vessel then they will look like cylindrical shapes. Gases: Gases are those states of matter whose atoms or particles are held together by a very weak force of attraction i.e. vanderwaal force of attraction which is less than that of forces in solids and in liquids. Gases do not have definite shape and volume. They move in the whole container in which they are placed. As they have a very weak force of attraction hence they occupy more space because they randomly move everywhere in the space.
The solid matter has the property of definite shape and volume because the molecules present in a solid are tightly packed so the molecules do not flow and there is no change in volume and force of attraction between the molecules will be very high that shows rigidity of molecule.
