Akbar was the oldest son of Humayun who under the title of Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar Badshah Ghazi, ascended the throne. Humayun died in 1556 and left the empire to his 13 year old son, Akbar . He was declared as shahenshah in his coronation at Kalanaur,Punjab in 1556 . Humayun's favourite and trustworthy Bairam Khan, who served as regent and tutor to the Mughal emperor from 1556 to 1560. He became a 'wakil' of the kingdom with the title of Khan-i-Khanan. For the first four years of Akbar's reign, he was one of the most competent soldiers of the time, the true ruler of the Mughal inheritance.

Defeat of hemu was one of the significant achievements during bairam khan's tenure of Akbar's regency. He led the Mughal forces at the second battle of Panipat(1556) to defeat Hemu, the wazir of Sur dynasty and allied Afghan forces. At the age of 18, in order to assume the actual power of the kingdom in his hands Akbar decided to release bairam khan from his services of the minister and regent in 1540. After this , bairam khan ,heartedly left for Mecca and was murdered on the way. Akbar married his widow, and his son, Abdul Rahim eventually became one of the chief nobles in mughal court .
