Hint: When nitrogen and oxygen react with each other in different ratios, they will form some nitrogen oxides. These oxides can be of different nature such as acidic, basic and neutral on the basis of their chemical properties. The oxides which do not show acidic or basic properties when reacted with water are called neutral oxides.
Complete answer:
The oxides are divided into three categories according to their nature, which are:
Acidic Oxides- Oxide reacts with water to form acid is known as acidic oxide.
Basic Oxides- Oxide that reacts with water to form base is known as basic oxide.
Neutral Oxides- The oxides which do not show acidic or basic properties when reacted with water are called neutral oxides.
There are some nitrogen oxides which are five in number, which are given below:
Nitrogen dioxide ( $ $ N{O_2} $ $ )
Nitric oxide ( $ NO $ )
Nitrous oxide ( $ {N_2}O $ )
Nitrogen trioxide ( $ N{O_3} $ )
Nitrogen pentoxide ( $ {N_2}{O_5} $ )
From the above mentioned nitrogen oxide, the neutral oxides are Nitric oxide ( $ NO $ ) and Nitrous oxide ( $ {N_2}O $ ).
Nitrous oxide is slightly soluble in water and hence, we can say that it is neutral oxide while Nitrous oxide is very much soluble in water, so it is also a neutral oxide.
Note:
So, we can conclude that, the neutral oxide do not react with an acid or a base but it is soluble in water whereas when there are some oxides which shows both acidic and basic properties such as they can react with both acid and base are known as amphoteric oxides. Hence, we can distinguish between neutral and amphoteric oxides now.
