Hint: The word ‘tissue’ is derived from the French word which means ‘to weave’. There are four different categories of tissues in animals. They are connective, muscular, nervous and epithelial. And in the case of plants, we have vascular, ground and epidermal. Groups of tissues form organs such as the brain and heart.
Complete answer:
>In order to find the true statement, we need to understand each of the following statements with some examples. In the first statement, it is stated that tissues are groups of organs with similar structure but different function. This definition is not true as the tissues in the muscular system seem similar and their function is also the same, that is, they form the muscle fibres.
>In the third statement, it is stated that cells with different function and appearance constitute the tissue. This statement is also incorrect because if we think practically, if the appearance and functions are different then what is the basis of grouping them as tissues.
>The fourth statement defines a tissue as a group of cells with identical appearance. This statement is wrong because there is no such mention about their function.
>The second statement defines tissue as a diverse group of cells that perform similar functions. This statement is true because the appearance of cells is mostly dependent on their functions. This explains why red blood cells are capsule shaped and white blood cells have no definite shape. Hence, we can say that tissues are a diverse group of cells that perform a specific function.
Hence the correct answer is option ‘B’.
Note:Here we should understand why this term ‘diverse group of cells’ is used. For example, we can say the cells as found in the small intestine which are responsible for absorbing nutrients are quite different in regards to types, size and others with those cells which work for muscular movement. In this order, from cells to tissues and going forward, the number of tissues and organs has been set and finally by collaboration of few organs, a system has been created or set up.
