There are two types of breeds-
Indigenous breed- These are the animals that are produced, grown, and live in their native place or habitat.
Exotic breed- This is the animal that came from different places and is not native.
Jersey is an exotic cow which is a native of the island of Jersey in the English Channel. Rest other cows in the option have their origin in India and Pakistan.
Indigenous dairy breeds of cows have a low milk production average on a daily basis while in comparison with them exotic breeds have much higher milk production.
The lactation period of the exotic breed is also relatively longer than our indigenous breed.
Due to these reasons exotic breeds are introduced. To improve the quantity and quality of milk production in indigenous breeds, cross breeding is done with exotic breeds.
Due to these cross-breeding, improved breeds or hybrids are produced. Some of them are-
Karan Swiss which is produced by crossbreeding between Brown Swiss and Sahiwal.
Karan-Fries which is produced by crossing Holstein- Friesian and Tharparkar.
Frieswal which is produced by crossing Holstein- Friesian and Sahiwal.
Note:
The average milk production of indigenous breeds is 6-8 litres daily while the average milk production of exogenous breeds is 60 litres.
