Hint: Stratum spinosum is called the spinous layer. This layer is also called the prickle layer. Cells in this layer have a lot of desmosomes. It also consists of thick filament in between the layers called keratin. Desmosomes are interconnected with each other and give the strength between the bonds of cells. It is available in between the stratum basale and stratum granulosum. This layer is made by polyhedral keratinocytes. It is joined with the desmosomes.
Complete answer:
Keratinocytes in the stratum spinosum are called the prickle cell. It has a polyhedral shape and has large pale staining nuclei. In animals epidermis is made by five layers. This layer is called the stratum. These layers protect the below skin from physical damage, water loss and infection. This layer synthesizes the fibrillary proteins. These are essential in the formation of desmosomes. It anchors between the cells and brings the strong between the cells. During tissue fixation the cells look like shrinking but tightly bound with each other. So it looks like prickly spines. So it is named as the prickle layer.
In the stratum spinosum layer Langerhans cells are available. Keratinocytes are used to produce keratin. So this layer is used to mature these keratinocytes. During the movement of cells into this layer may extend the cell process. Stratum basale produces the new cells and the stratum spinosum layer removes the keratinocytes to the stratum granulosum. It undergoes the mitosis cell division method to form new cells. Dendritic cells are found in this layer. During the movement of cells the keratinocytes lose the ability to divide.
Note:
These living cells look round and filled with fluid. It is the thickest skin compared to other layers. It is accumulated by keratin fibers and lamellar bodies. This lamellar body is filled with lipids. This layer is used for the skin cells working together. It also has the Hrenstayin's cell. The cells in this layer are called the immunological cells or protection cells. Langerhans cells are the first one produced by the skin while entering pathogens into the skin. It provides immunity to the skin.
