When classification of tea was done, they were initially kept under species Camellia sinensis. The large leaf Assam tea plants were considered as the species of Sinensis and were included. However, later the botanists named the Assam tea plants according to appropriate ranks.
There are two major taxa of tea and they are assigned accordingly as Camellia sinensis for china plants and C.assamica for Assam tea plants. There was a third race which was a distinct race of tea and referred to as “camodiensis” or “Tran ninh” which was recognised as a subspecies of Assam tea plants.
