In medical terms, ear drums are referred to as Tympanic membranes. Meaning of the word 'tympanum' is 'bell-like' or something that resonates. Therefore, anybody that has capability to resonate like a bell is called tympanum. So, is for ear drums. Ear drums are responsible for vibrating as banged by the sound waves falling on their surface. As their task is similar to that of bells so are referred to as tympanum.
Ear drum is preceded by earlobe and ear canal. The ear canal has certain wax glands and hairs that keep producing mucosal wax. It helps in preventing genes entry into the brain through ear openings. These two are responsible for collecting the sound waves from the outer environment and transferring it to the inner ear such that the brain decodes it for the body to respond in respective manner. Ear drums are followed by a combination of three small bones that receive the vibrations and amplify it to transfer it to the inner ear. Later the inner ear converses these sound.waves into auditory impulses that are then received and interpreted by the brain to give certain responses.
