Hint: The process of taking in of oxygen from the atmosphere and using this oxygen for the oxidation of food is referred to as respiration. The animals inhale oxygen through their nose and exhale out carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The respiratory system includes the nose, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, and a pair of lungs.

Complete answer:
The trachea is also known as the windpipe is an essential part of the respiratory system. It is the cartilaginous tube that joins the larynx to the bronchi. It begins in the bottom of the larynx and branches into the left and right bronchi. The part of the trachea that begins at the larynx consists of cricoid cartilages and as the trachea descends the chest, it is covered by 22-U shaped ring-like structures that aids in holding the windpipe open to establish a smooth flow of air in and out of the pipe. The posterior wall of the trachea is covered with connective tissues and smooth muscle to aid in the expansion of the pipe while the air comes in and goes out. The upper part of the trachea channels blood through inferior thyroid arteries and veins. The lower part of the trachea receives the blood from the bronchial arteries. The main function of the trachea is to supply air through it to and from the alveoli of the lungs. It aids in transmitting oxygen from the air to the lungs and removes carbon dioxide from the lungs to the atmosphere.

Note:
Trachea has an inner membrane lined with mucous- secreting cells and hair-like projections known as cilia. This is to avoid any dust or foreign particles up and out of the airway. It also has submucosal glands that secret water molecules and mucin on the tracheal lining.
