Hint: The middle portion of the cardiac wall is known as the atrioventricular septum. It divides the heart into the left and right sides. This division of heart takes place over just 10 days during the 4th and 5th week of an embryo's development. Its main job is to prevent the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
Complete answer:
Septum present in the heart is a very essential part of the heart. It is present between the right and left atrium known as atrial septum and also present between the right and left ventricles known as ventricular septum. The septum that separates the atria and ventricles is known as the atrioventricular septum. It separates the heart in such a way that it forms a barrier between the heart chambers which prevents the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
Functions-
1. The main function of the septum in the heart is forming a barrier between the two ventricles of the heart.
2. It also divides the heart in such a manner that it divides right and left ventricles.
3. Due to this barrier, it does not allow the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
4. It also maintains rigidity, support, and helps in the proper functioning of the heart.
5. The AV septum is also the home of the heart's conduction system. This is because the electric current that causes the heart to beat runs through this area.
Note: Any type of tear, holes, or defect in the septum can lead to major damage to the heart and body. It will mainly cause the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. There are three types of septal defects-
Atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD)
Ventricular septal defect (VSD)
Atrial septal defect (ASD)
