This is a legally protected area by the Government where Human intervention is strictly prohibited by the law.
It is the innermost untroubled ecosystem.

Biosphere reserves conserve the ecosystems, species, genetic diversities, and landscapes without making any change to the inhabitants.

There are eighteen biosphere reserves that are registered in the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme list. Among them twelve biosphere reserves are in India.
Nilgiri is the firstly declared as a Biosphere Reserve in India and the Great Nicobar is the lastly declared biosphere reserve of India.
