Hint: There are some equipment which protect the potential damage of piping by collecting dirt and other particles that may be carried by the process fluid
Complete step by step answer:
A strainer is defined as equipment specially designed to remove unwanted large particles from a liquid suspension, usually to protect some sort of downstream equipment, such as pump or more delicate filter, from the damage that may be caused by the rogue particles
Types of strainers
Y type strainers:
These flanged ‘Y’ strainers are most commonly used. These are suitable for oil, water and gas. The design is compact with full filtration area for low pressure drop and more debris collection. It has a drain plug which can be replaced with a ball valve for the continuous blow off. The element is strengthened for long life and rigidity and is fitted in machined seats.
Basket type strainer:
Basket strainers feature top removal of the screen. The screen has a lifting handle having the form of a basket which collects all the particulate matter that is retained by the screen which could be easily disposed of later. Strainer basket captures the particulate matter. The line is then shut down temporarily and the basket is removed for cleaning purpose or for replacement.
Conical type strainer:
It is a temporary strainer for any fluid application. For tapping foreign particles in the pipeline temporary strainers are used. It is also used as resin traps
Duplex type basket strainer
Duplex style basket strainers are also available which consists of two parallel basket strainers along with diverting valves
Note: Additional information:
Strainers are important components of piping systems in order to protect the equipment from potential damage caused due to dirt. Strainers may be placed upstream of pumps during the system start up and flushing just to protect them from development of debris which may have been left in the pipe
The strainers should have an area not less than three times the cross sectional area of the suction line
The device which removes particles from given liquid/ gas is called a filter. It involves the removal particles of specified micron sizes by disposable medium. A Strainer is also a type of filter where it uses a perforated plate or screen mesh for the removal of larger particles from a process stream
