The process by which we release energy from organic compounds is known as Respiration. The released energy is then used for performing different physical activities. During respiration, the organic compounds are broken down internally into carbon dioxide and water. Since this process takes place internally, respiration is also known as Internal Respiration. It is an involuntary action that takes place automatically in our body depending on the reactants and reactions. Our body cells contain mitochondria, in which respiration takes place. Since the glucose is oxidized in the presence of oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water it is known as Metabolic process. There are two types of respiration: aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
The type of cellular respiration that takes place in presence of oxygen and produces energy is known as Aerobic Respiration. It happens both in plants and animals. The end product in this type of respiration is water and carbon dioxide.
When respiration takes place in absence of oxygen and does not produce energy, it is known as Anaerobic respiration. In this, the glucose gets broken down without the help of oxygen.

Note:The energy produced during the respiration process is in the form of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) which is otherwise called an energy molecule. A human takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide, whereas plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen during the respiration process.
